GS Metro’s Carl Donaldson powered to victory in his own club’s Andy Mallen Memorial 26-mile time trial near Belsay in Northumberland on Saturday, taking 1-36 from the previous best.
The 35-year-old clocked 57-36 to beat National 12-hour Champion and team-mate Danny Grieves’ old course record, and take the win on the day by 1-35 from another GS Metro rider, Under-23 Tim Wilcock, while veteran Shaun Tyson (Adept Precision RT) was just one second further back in third place.
With Andrew Hall making up their best three, GS Metro also took the team prize from Derwentside CC, while Charlotte Cooper (GS Metro) was also fastest female with 1:18.52.
The event was renamed the Andy Mallen Memorial in memory of the brother of the organiser, Michael Mallen. Andy died after crashing on the descent of La Bastille into Grenoble, and his brother amassed around £1,500 worth of prizes for this event.
Prizes of note included the club’s founder Maurice Harbottle, the 61-year-old coming out of retirement after almost 20 years to ride the event on a road bike and take 38th place.
And another GS Metro rider, Phil Green was awarded with a bottle of champagne (donated by club stalwart and 1988 National 50 champion Mick Bradshaw), in recognition of his efforts at the recent Northumberland coastal run, where his CPR on a collapsed runner managed to save his life.
